Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
Counselling is not eligible for rebates on medicare, however, it can be a good idea to take into account cost differences between psychologists and counsellors. Given that psychologists tend to charge a minimum of $250 and with the rebate being approx. $84, you will be out of pocket by approximately $170 per session with a psychologist. Remedy works hard to keep fees fair and affordable whilst providing high quality services.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist/counsellor? Which one is better?
Psychologists are able to formally assess and provide limited diagnosis for some conditions in Australia, whereas counsellors and psychotherapists are not. Issue dependent, both disciplines can provide the same psychotherapuetic support with the correct training. In matters such as ADHD, anxiety, stress or couples work, all of these professions have the ability to deliver the same service.
Do I need a mental health treatment plan to register?
While Remedy Therapy often receives referrals from GPs, there is no requisite to have a mental health plan in place. The only benefit of a plan when it comes to psychotherapy is that some psychologists can provide the rebate, as above.
Do you offer remote sessions?
The majority of clients have opted for remote sessions. The feedback has been that clients feel more comfortable in their own homes and appreciate not having to travel. Face to face sessions are also available - and hugely popular too - at our practice in south Canberra.
Can you diagnose and assess me for ADHD?
If you suspect you have ADHD, you will need to speak to your GP to request a referral to a specialist. In the ACT, there are currently a few psychiatrists and at least one neurologist who can diagnose and assess. Frequently, psychotherapy is recommended to manage symptoms and adapt to a new diagnosis. That’s where Remedy Therapy can assist as one of Canberra’s few specialist therapy centres that specialise in ADHD management.
I think we need couples therapy but my partner won't participate?
Individuals often opt to discuss relationships matters on their own, and this can be a great opportunity to explore their perspective of the relationship and what the issues are. A joint intro session can be arranged for couples who are apprehensive so you can be reassured of what the counselling process will look like together.
